The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 20, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM ET and on Friday from 10:00 AM until the service hour.

Clemons Hicks was born on August 15, 1937, in Long Island, Alabama to Fred Hicks, Sr. and Beulah Hicks. Clem spent his young life on the family farm with his brothers; he left school after the 8th grade to work full time on the farm.

One of his first jobs off of the farm was building boats for Chris-Craft. He honed his carpentry and craftsman skills which led him to a 30+ year career as a cabinet maker for Architectural Millwork in Chattanooga, TN. His true calling was taking care of his family. He dedicated his life to getting up early to get the job done. That could have been building an addition to the house, furniture, decks, cabinets, and even birdfeeders and anything else Shirley desired. Clemons took pride in his sons and always made the time to be at their sporting events, 4-H shows, and everything else they were involved in.

Clem married the love of his life, his “Texas Red”, Shirley, in 1959 and they shared 67 wonderful years together raising their boys and building a life filled with love and family on Sand Mountain. Clemons did everything he could to convince their sons to be hard-working, farming, country boys. However, they had other ideas.

Clemons was very proud of and dedicated to his community. He spent 18 years as a fire fighter in the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Dept. and five years as the fire department chief. During this time, he was instrumental in securing the funding to build a fire station and furnish the equipment and vehicles for the local Bryant Fire Station. He served two terms as the Constable and enjoyed working alongside the officers in the Jackson County Sherriff’s Department. Clem is a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police. After that he became president of the Bryant Neighborhood Watch and worked closely with the county government to raise money for the community center and a security patrol car for the Neighborhood Watch. In his later years, Clemons started the Bryant Cemetery Association. They work continually to ensure that the cemetery is funded and well-maintained.

Clem truly believed his community on Sand Mountain was the best place on this earth. The adage, “There’s no place like home” was not truer for anyone more than Clemons Hicks.

After giving his heart to Jesus in 1966, he became a man dedicated to the Lord and his faith. He was active in the local church community serving in leadership roles. He was a witness for the Lord by showing Christ’s love to all he met. He treated people with respect and decency and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His ministry was far-reaching though he never stepped foot in a pulpit.

Clemons was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Clarence, and Fred Jr.; and his father-in-law, Harvey Pope and mother-in-law, Omega Pope.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; sons, Richard and wife Janice of Trenton, GA, Kevin and wife Karen of Bryant, AL, and Bryan and wife Tricia of Abilene, TX; 7 grandchildren, Clay Hicks and wife Jamie, Beth Goodwin and husband Scott, Misty Knight and husband Anthony, Sonya Abbott, Ashley Miles and husband John, Tyler Hicks and wife Emily, and Madison Scott and husband Tyson; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren (1coming in January); many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Clemons spent a lifetime knowing and living that the power of your word, hard work, and treating people with respect was the best way to make the world and his community a better place.
