Dorthia Smith

November 1, 1945 — September 4, 2025

Listen to Obituary

Dorthia Marie “Dot” Smith, age 79, of Higdon, AL, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 4, 2025. She passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorthia was born on November 1, 1945, to the late Oval and Gracie Cagle Higdon. In 1963, she married Harold Smith, and together they shared 54 years of marriage until his passing in 2017. Their greatest joy was raising a loving family, which became the highlight of Dorthia’s life.

Faith was always at the center of her life. She received the Holy Ghost on July 7, 1960, and was a devoted member of Higdon Free Holiness Church.

Affectionately known as “Dorthy Dot” or “MawMaw Dot,” she was admired for her kind and caring spirit. She enjoyed a successful career as a salesperson with Christmas Around the World and Avon, but her greatest fulfillment came from caring for her family, whom she loved dearly.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Deana Lynch, Dean & Lisa Smith, and Jeff Smith; siblings, Earline Pritchett, Leedell Higdon, and Lebron Higdon; grandchildren, Billy & Chelzie Brewer, Dakota & Kayla Smith, Dillon & Amber Smith, Houston & Dixie Smith, Preston & Camyrn Smith, Austin & Tiffany Smith, Gracie & Thomas Blizzard; great-grandchildren, Bentlee, Kaden, Tucker, Brody, Grayson, Callie, and Blakely Smith; special niece, Alaina Lenser; along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold Smith; parents, Oval and Gracie Higdon; siblings, Garlton Higdon Sr., Lavita Higdon, Patricia Bryant, Lendon Higdon, Arthur Tinker, and Pan Higdon; granddaughter, Alisha Brewer; and great-grandchildren, Alysha Brewer, Branson Brewer, and Cooper Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Higdon Free Holiness Church with Brother Edwin Spurgeon, Brother Bradley Wooten, and Brother Jody Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Higdon Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, September 6, from 3:00–9:00 PM ET, and again on Sunday from 11:00 AM until the service hour.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Hospice of North Alabama, especially Alicia Robertson, for their compassionate care. They would also like to thank Jennifer Baker, Rachel Adams, and Kayla Smith for their kindness, love, and support during this time.

Dorthia will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
