Mary Jean Cornell

Mary Jean Cornell, a resident of Flat Rock, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at the age of 91.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Mary's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 22, 2026 in the Larry Moore Memorial Chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Ed Emerson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 AM until the service hour. A private interment will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery. 

Mary was born on June 25, 1934 to the late Burt and Recie Matthews and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She was a devoted Christian who cherished her faith in the Lord. She attended Life & Praise Church in Flat Rock, where she enjoyed spending time in fellowship with her brothers and sister in Christ. Mary adored her family and cherished each moment spent together and made many wonderful memories over the years. Following a long and successful career, she retired from the Chattanooga Bakery, where she worked as a line operator. 

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Marilyn (Rafe) Boatner; her siblings, Jack Matthews, Ovie Bretti and Glenna Vann; her granddaughter, Gina (Randy) Crow, great-grandson, Creed Crow and several bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

In addition to her parents, Mary is also preceded in death by her husbands, Muriel Underwood and Jay Cornell; her son, Jack Underwood and her brother, John Matthews.
