Major Richard C. (Dick) Haynie, USAF retired, age 95, of Wildwood, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 19, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 3:00 PM in the Larry Moore Memorial Chapel of Moore Funeral Home in Trenton, Georgia, with Brother Dewayne Roberson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Moore Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:30 PM until the service hour.
Born in 1930, in Winder, Georgia, to Henry E. and Carrie Haynie, née Cochran, Dick was devoted to his family and country. He was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor.
He is survived and will be missed by daughter Jill (Ben) Brandon and son Jack (Cathy) Haynie, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends, especially those he made at church since moving to Dade County. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, his beloved, oldest daughter, Jennifer (Charles) Kimbrell, and his wife of 68 years, Helen, or as he called her, “Precious Mama.”
A USAF fighter pilot, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star and 16 Oakleaf Clusters. He was a talented woodworker and crafted many items treasured by his family. His skills extended to creating furniture and custom drawers in cabinets, and he gladly shared his knowledge and handiwork with his children and grandchildren. He also loved Helen’s biscuits and enjoyed two for breakfast for many, many years, right up to the end of his life.
When Helen retired, she and Dick moved to Dade County, Georgia, to live near Jill, Ben and their then infant daughter. They bought a house and spent many happy years completing major and minor renovations, a passion of both. Their out-of-state children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited Grandmother (Helen) and Granddaddy (Dick) regularly. Shortly after moving to Dade County, they joined Jill and her family as members of Trenton First Baptist Church, where they regularly attended church, bible studies and events, making many friends and becoming an integral part of the church family. For several years, as part of the outreach team, they visited people in the community, telling them about the church and sharing the gospel with them.
Like his wife, Helen, Dick had the hope and assurance of eternal life through his faith in Christ Jesus. Hebrews 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Though our hearts are heavy with grief at her loss, “we do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13.
