Vernon Edward Johnson, age 82, of Higdon, Alabama, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at his home surrounded by his beloved family.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate Vernon’s life will be held at 1:00 PM EST on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Bryant Chapel of Moore Funeral Home, with Jim Hixson and Zaye McCrary officiating. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Kennemer Baptist Church Cemetery in Flat Rock. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST, and on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the service hour.
Born on July 27, 1943, in Flat Rock, Alabama, Vernon was the son of the late Edard and Nellie Miles Johnson. He was a devoted member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Higdon, where he and his family faithfully worshipped. Vernon’s strong faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and he dedicated himself to serving the Lord with steadfast commitment.
Vernon enjoyed a meaningful career with the Tennessee Valley Authority as a carpenter and was proud to be part of the original construction team at the Bellfonte Plant in Hollywood, Alabama. Beyond his professional career, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his family. He also found joy in outdoor activities such as turkey hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Arthell Porter Johnson; their children, Renee Johnson Parker, Vernell (Rebecca) Johnson, and Kevin (Jenny) Johnson; his sister, Carolyn Anderton; grandchildren, Charity (Elijah) Parker, Heather (Brandon) Blackwood, Julie Johnson, Cara (Tyler) Tuten, Jordan (Briana) Johnson, and Ellie Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Ayden Parker, Emery Dobbins, Mackie Crow, Chevy Blalock, Kova Jay Tuten, Koda Ray Tuten, Erien Dobbins, Landon Blackwood, Ava Blackwood, Mae Mae Lowry, Abel Lowry, Easton Edgeworth, and Coast McCloud. He also leaves behind many friends and extended family members who cherished him.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was also preceded in death by his brother, Carlton Frazier.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his dedicated nursing team: Niki, Kaitlyn, and Cheyenne with Southern Care New Beacon Hospice for the compassionate care they provided during Vernon’s final days.
