Our History

Our History

Moore Funeral Home has been a fixture in Trenton, Georgia, since 1945 but our roots date back to 1917. Lewis McBryar established the McBryar Brothers General Store in Trenton, which eventually included homemade caskets among its wares. The slogan "If it is in Trenton, we have it; if we don’t have it, we will get it" rightly encapsulates his commitment to excellence.

In 1943, Lewis purchased Smith Funeral Home in Fort Payne, Alabama, and continued to operate the business with the same personnel. Sherman C. Moore married Gladys McBryar and joined her father's business as a licensed funeral director in 1945. This proved to be the start of a family tradition that would endure throughout the generations.

Sherman pursued his passion for funeral services by enrolling in classes at John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science in Nashville while working as an architectural engineer for Vultce Aircraft Industry in Nashville. Upon graduation, he moved his family - sons Sherman Jr, Ronnie, Larry Sr - to Fort Payne, AL and assumed full operations of the funeral home. He changed the name to McBryar Funeral Home and expanded the business to provide monuments and ambulance services. In 1955, Mr. Moore purchased the business, equipment and inventory of the McBryar Funeral Home from Lewis and moved to Trenton later that year.  After Sherman’s sudden passing at age 51 in 1968, Gladys continued to run the funeral home with their sons’ help until her retirement in 1970.

Ronnie Moore followed in Sherman's footsteps and in 1970 he constructed a new funeral home building in Trenton. He added another chapel in Bryant, AL in 1982, making access to funeral services for those in need more accessible than ever before within their area.

Ronnie’s untimely death at age 54 led Larry Sr. to assume full control of the business which he ultimately managed for over 25 years.

The family found itself with a tragedy on its hands when tornadoes hit Trenton in April 2011 causing severe damage to its premises; but Larry Sr. decided to rebuild the funeral home at the same location.  He operated the business out of a temporary trailer and local churches while the building was reconstructed.

Larry Sr. continued to operate Moore Funeral Home until his passing in October 2022, leaving a profound legacy behind of compassionate service and community dedication.

Today, his son Larry Moore II has taken up his mantle to continue this family legacy into its fourth generation.

Moore Funeral Home has persevered for generations and become an intrinsic part of its community. The family-owned and operated funeral home has provided comfort and support for families under the guidance of different family members but always with our client’s needs remaining central.
