When Is It Time to Delete Their Number?
I was scrolling through the contacts on my phone today looking for a number, when something caught my attention.
There are quite a few people still in my phone who are no longer here.
I had never really thought about it in a while. But as I scrolled through their names, the memories started coming back.
Bob Kramer. My father-in-law, successful businessman.
Chris Green. Super Bowl parties, Georgia-Alabama games.
Chris Holified. My best friend since high school, a lifetime of memories.
Craig Taylor. Golf trips, tailgating, fantasy football.
Dad. A lifetime of memories that could never be summed up in a few words.
And the list goes on.
Seeing those names didn't make me sad like I might have expected. They made me smile. Each one reminded me of a good time, a funny story or simply how fortunate I was to have known that person.
I also found myself pausing to think of their families and saying a quick prayer for them.
It made me wonder: When is the right time to delete the contact of someone who has died?
For some, keeping that name may be painful, and deleting it might feel right. There's nothing wrong with that.
But I've decided to keep mine.
I may never call those numbers again, but every once in a while, I'll scroll past a name and remember something I hadn't thought about in years.
And I'll be glad I knew them.
Maybe some contacts aren't really about the phone number anymore.
Maybe they're about the memories.
